04May06: Welcome to WryDawn's tour notes! Come back often to read our stories from our upcoming tour: we'll be updating this page as often as we can with news n notes... Just 9 days now till the kick-off show!
12May06: Here we go! Kick-off show at S&P!!!! We'll do full-band show with guests a-plenty...
13May06: Thanks to S&P and Pascale! Thanks to the Allens and Kenny Demith for hanging out and helping out all night long... We're kicked off!!! ;)
14May06 - 0622: Good morning! Harrison, AR, here we come...
14May06 - 2350: BIG BIG THANKS to DJ Wray and family and friends for the good-times grass-rocking event tonight!!!! Village Cafe felt like home... and we loved the impromptu open jam at the end of the show!! We'll be back on July 6th!
16May06: Wow, we really are on tour! A good show last night at The HUB in Springfield to some very appreciative friends. Thank you very much Mike, Michelle & Zachary for the crash pad! "Kansas City, Kansas City, here we come..."
18May06: If you're ever in the neighborhood, drop in on Newton, Iowa: good people here!!! Many thanks to Holly and the Newton Public Library for a warm welcome... Ricky Moore is the best... We're doing some impromptu recording today...followed by a BBQ at Ricky's place... Big show at the Jasper Winery, courtesy of "Dragon Studios", tomorrow night: three acoustic acts (headlined by Wry Dawn) followed by an open jam... Come on down!! ;)
22May06: From Newton to Chicago... We left with regrets, given the warm hospitality of Ricky Moore and all the good folk we met... Don Thurn was such a pleasure to hang with: we want to rock with you in Colorado sometime, Don! But away we went... through the corn fields... then into the Windy City by mid-afternoon on the 20th... (Ugh! The traffic!!!!!) DW forced Paul to visit childhood haunts in the NW 'burbs (he was cheerful about it!), but the Loop, and Rush St., and Lincoln Park, and Wrigleyville all made their mark on us too... Uncommon Ground is a very cool place, especially on a Sunday night: thanks, Rich!!!!! We enjoyed the music we heard from those playing before and after us... and we were delighted with our 45 minute performance... Turns out that Alice in Chains was playing a club located just a block south of Uncommon Ground on the same night: we thought the big line out front was for Wry Dawn!!!!!! Anyway, now we are comfortably situated in Hoosier-land at the Murphy Bed & Breakfast in Warsaw, Indiana: our only double-header of the Tour takes place Wednesday the 24th, starting at noon and continuing at 7pm! Courthouse Coffee East, here we come!
23May06: Comfortably resting here in Warsaw, we thought you might like an inventory of "lost and found" items on the trip so far... LOST: 1 microphone cable, 2 cigarettes (in the box), 1 ear plug (we think it's somewhere under the driver's seat in the jeep), 1 blue pen, 2 beers (broken while we were unloading at CIP in Kansas City), DW's phone charger (we suspect it was left in the Motel 6 in Des Plaines, IL); FOUND: 1 1/4" instrument cable (we think we inadvertently stole it from The Hub in Springfield!! Whoops!!!), 1 capo (Ricky, this belongs to you!!!), 2 egg yolks (found on the rear left side of the Jeep: somebody in the NW Chicago suburbs doesn't like Texas, apparently)...
25May06 - 1000: It's a cloudy and cool day in Warsaw, Indiana... We're about to "do what we gotta do" and hit the road for Detroit... Thanks to Jeff and Lynn and the boys -- and of course to Courthouse Coffee East -- for a great stay... We had a great doubleheader gig yesterday, meeting a lot of music-lovers and drinking lots of yummy coffee... The evening show turned out to be the big hit, and we're grateful to everybody who clapped for our "grass-rock" originals... Onward we go! (STAY TUNED FOR MORE PICS FROM THE ROAD!!)
27May06 - 1600: Detroit rocks city... here we are! We're so very grateful to Corey and Megan Bildstein and all their friends and family who've been hanging out with us for 2 days... Two great shows and two fun-filled nights...including some feather-bowling at Cadieux Cafe on Thursday night... Special thanks to Karen & Jim at Mary Donnelly's: we can't wait to come back! Now we're taking a day off to go to the Tigers-Indians game and otherwise just enjoy the company of Corey & Megan and all their friends here... We'll be on the road to Dayton/Cincinnati tomorrow...and will check in with you sometime after that... Hey, we've put up a bunch of pictures, so check 'em out in the PHOTO Gallery!
31May06: Hot, humid days in Dayton and Cincinnati...but we're smiling... we jammed on both the front and back porches of the Gustefson household in Dayton (great playing, Dan! and Owen!), then showed the Cincy Cheeseburger in Paradise what it means to grass-rock... Special thanks go out to Dallas' biggest music-lover, Ms. Patricia Poston, who decided to show up and support Wry Dawn in Ohio. Thanks, Patti! GREAT tambourine-playing! ;) Thanks to Rich and Mel for the Cincy hospitality! Onward to Cleveland -- and the Barking Spider Tavern -- now!
03Jun06: We blew in with the summer storm... and found ourselves a home away from home in Cleveland! Lucky and Patty made us comfortable upon our arrival... The Barking Spider Tavern proved to be a cozy, music-loving place on the campus of Case Western University... We visited the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday (hey! you get in free when you give them a copy of a cd of original music... so I guess you could say we're in the Hall of Fame now!)... and we played a private party at the Chunnel Club on Friday night...jamming with the groovy members of "Generation Gap"... Thanks, Lucky! Thanks, Cleveland! Goin' to Pittsburgh now!
04Jun06: Lost and Found update... Lost: 1 large magnetic Wry Dawn sticker, previously affixed to right side of jeep (must've blown off somewhere on Hwy 71); $25 (given to the City of Cleveland: see "Found" notes)... Found: 1 Cleveland city parking ticket (oops) on the jeep windshield; 5 nylon picks (.78 mm) in DW's backpack (he forgot he had stashed 'em there); more Taco Bells than you can shake a stick at...
05Jun06 - 1500: Had too much fun to stop for Internet updates while visiting our buddy Jerry in P-burgh, but now that we've stopped to catch our breath here in Baltimore: it was great! Everyone should visit Pittsburgh at least once in their life: beautiful place, kind people... hey, we wrote a song about it, so why say anything more?!? Our Saturday night gig was cancelled last minute, unfortunately, but the Sunday night gig at Mojoe Coffeehouse went swimmingly. Okay, we enjoyed the gorgeous drive to Baltimore this morning, and now are waiting until tonight's gig at Ze Mean Bean Cafe... More soon!
06Jun06 - 2348: A day of sightseeing... after last night's gig at Ze Mean Bean. Good food at the Mean Bean, which is quite the classy little coffeehouse, situated in scenic Fells Point in Baltimore. We give thanks to Becca & friends for supporting us all evening long... We look forward to returning to Ze Mean Bean in the future! Today found us squinting in the sunshine of Federal Hill and the Inner Harbor... then we sat in the bleachers on a gorgeous east coast evening for the Orioles game: too bad the visitors won, 6-4. Paul wasn't too upset that his favorite team lost, but the good-times grass-rock guitarist deserved a home-team victory, now didn't he?!?! Tomorrow will find us picking and grinning all day long, with a few more sight-seeing activities planned... Happy Hour at Brewer's Art 'round 5pm, if anyone cares to join us!
08Jun06: From B'more to S. Orange, NJ... Wish us luck negotiating the New Jersey road system!!! [Edit: yeah, well, we did all right, although we crossed over the same bridge a few too many times trying to find our way around...]
09Jun06 - 0930: Magical, magical, magical show... thanks to Magical Marian Glenn and the Seton Hall University folks (along with our #1 fan back in Dallas, Ms. Patricia Poston, listening live courtesy of Sprint PCS) who came out to support us at The (Dancing) Goat Cafe last night... Truly a great show: we played for almost two hours in the comfy, acoustic-friendly, living room-like conditions of the performance hall at The Goat...and the enthusiastic crowd lifted us up as high as any show we've played yet on the Tour... Paul is now a local celebrity! We're eager to get back to this terrific little east coast town of South Orange... Who knew?! We're so grateful to Marian and Dan for hosting us: Marian, you made the magic happen! Stay tuned for pictures from the past week's shows: we'll post them ASAP!
10Jun06: We tip our hats to Jeff and the Perking Latte Cafe for another fun coffeehouse experience... and on Staten Island, no less. A great venue: comfortable and classy both. We look forward to coming back! But... hey... a word to the wise: beware the park enforcement agents on Staten Island, 'cause they don't fool around! Anyway, it's the halfway point of the tour, so we're going to take a little break and catch our breath... We'll check in later this week!
13Jun06: We've caught our breath here in Naugatuck, CT, and now it's on to the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport: see you tonight at the Open Mic, featuring Wry Dawn!
14Jun06: Thanks to Greg and Chris for supporting -- and hosting -- us in Naugatuck! We're set to take the long way to Boston through these here northeastern hills n forests, so off we go...
15Jun06: It's a beautiful day in Beantown... We're resting easy right now in the southwest suburb of Bellingham with the Wolfs, but you can catch us tonight at Sally O'Brien's in Cambridge and tomorrow night at The Point (with a special guest from Big D in the house) right next to Faneuil Hall! We'll hope to see you soon!
17June06 - 1000: Time to tour Boston and thereabouts! We plan to drive to Minuteman Park in Concord, then visit Walden Pond, then head into the city, then -- eventually -- make it to Providence tonight for the Waterfire celebration! Ready, set, go!
18Jun06: Happy Father's Day one and all! We're celebrating Daddy's Day with Dave Wolf and friends n family here in Bellingham, MA... Mikayla Anne is making sure everyone is comfortable and doing what they should! The sandbox is open for business too!
19Jun06 - 0630: Good morning! Shortly we'll be on the road again... Will be in touch when we can!
20Jun06: Goodness gracious, the Northeast is beautiful this time of year... Truly an inspiration...
23Jun06: Sad news, friends: the June Jamboree has been cancelled, so don't plan to meet us in Hartford, Tennessee next week! We'll likely head home to Big D in the meantime... and concoct a new plan for finishing up... We'll hope to catch you on the other side -- closer to home!
4Jul06: Happy 4th of July everyone! Tennessee is pleasant this time o year... and the fireworks in Monterey are gonna be great... We ARE taking a breather thanks to that unexpected gap in the schedule (due to the unhappy cancelling of our beloved June Jamboree... aw, darn...)... Hey, our next show will be... in DENTON, TEXAS, on July 7th. Hope to meet up with you there!
7Jul06: Hey, it's the last weekend of the Tour! We'll hope to see you in Denton TONIGHT and in Dallas TOMORROW night!
9Jul06: Oh my my my... Thank you, Pascale and S&P for hosting our Tour wrap-up! Thank you to everyone who (unexpectedly and expectedly alike) came out to support us last night! We are SO grateful! It was a great full-band show with Brian Garcia guesting for a mini-set and Micael Duran helping us do our grass-rock thing on a few numbers... A great end to our great experience with figuring out "Where the Sun Goes"... ;)
